Applications for the John Nicholson Annual £500 Bursary Award are now open.

The Foundation is an Island charity which was founded following the death of John Hobson Nicholson in 1988. John was the only British artist of the 20th century to have designed coins, stamps and banknotes. His outstanding talent was recognised worldwide and he was awarded membership of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours.

The object of the Foundation as specified by John is to “advance visual arts in the Isle of Man……by way of grants, awards bursaries or prizes “.

Since its formation, the Foundation has supported many local artists and recently it has been able to make an annual bursary award of £500 as well as other awards at the discretion of the Council of Management. The 2018/19 Bursary holder is Alice Dudley who received £500.

Applications are now invited for the 2019/2020 Award. The Bursary Year will run from 1st October 2019 until 30th September 2020. Applications should be addressed to the Secretary and must be received by Friday 26th July 2019.

More About the Foundation

The Foundation is an Island charity which was founded following the death of John Hobson Nicholson in 1988. The Foundation is managed by the Rotary Club of Rushen and Western Mann of which John was a member.

Since then the Foundation has supported many local artists and awards an annual bursary of £500. The current Bursary holder is Alice Dudley. Other awards may also be made at the discretion of the Council.

John Nicholson was the only British artist of the 20th century to have designed coins, stamps and banknotes.  During his long and distinguished career John Nicholson prepared the artwork for more that 170 stamps after the Island’s postal service became independent in 1973. His outstanding talent was recognised worldwide and he was awarded membership of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours.

The artist’s love for the Isle of Man and his Manx heritage were always reflected truly in his works.

Since his death the Foundation has continued to support artists and the visual arts and all funds raised and managed by the Foundation are passed on to the recipients.
