John Samuel Wood

John is a brass instrumental teacher, tuba player, conductor, and Musical Director of The Brass Machine and until recently, held the position of Principal Tuba with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra; South Africa’s leading professional symphony orchestra.

Having studied at Chetham’s School of Music, Royal Northern College of Music and Royal Academy of Music, John’s career has included appearances the Hallé Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra Brass Ensemble, Beijing Symphony Orchestra, China National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra, Macao Orchestra, Taipei Philharmonic Orchestra, Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra and Black Dyke Brass Band to mention a few.

A passionate educator, John has taught at renowned institutions including the Junior Royal Academy of Music, China Central Conservatory of Music, China Conservatory of Music, Dulwich College International School of Beijing and Durban School of Music to mention a few. He is currently the brass instrumental teacher at King William’s College and teaches brass at Ramsey Grammar School for the Isle of Man Music Service. John conducts the Manx Youth Concert Wind Orchestra and is the Musical Director of the Ramsey Grammar School Pep Band.
