Modern and Contemporary Loan Collection: Bringing Local Art into Everyday Spaces
Over 300 pieces from the Isle of Man Modern and Contemporary Art Loan Collection have been digitised, making this remarkable public art collection accessible to audiences wherever they are in the world.
Established more than 30 years ago by artists David Fletcher and Eileen Schaer, the Loan Collection features works by internationally acclaimed artists including Dame Tracey Emin, Josef Albers, Patrick Caulfield, David Hockney, Dame Paula Rego, Sir Antony Gormley and Sarah Maple. The collection has always had a clear purpose, to make high-quality contemporary art available for display in public spaces across the Island. The launch of a fully searchable digital archive marks a significant step forward, making it easier than ever to explore and engage with the collection.

Suzie Walker, Arts Project Coordinator for the Isle of Man Arts Council, said: "This project has been a real labour of love. The collection has grown over the years, and for the first time, an online digital archive will not only allow us to track and care for the artworks more effectively, but it will also give the public a chance to see the scope of the collection. Whether you're an artist, collector, or just someone who appreciates art, this resource will be invaluable."
Each work has been professionally photographed in high resolution by local artist and photographer Carola Rush, who set up a temporary studio near the Arts Council office to capture every piece to the highest standard. These detailed records will support the Isle of Man Arts Council in managing the collection more effectively, from conservation to public access.
For the first time, visitors to the archive will also be able to see exactly where each artwork is currently on display across the Island, via an interactive map. The archive will continue to grow as more pieces are added. To explore the first tranche of the collection, visit iomarts.com/loan.
A selection of works from the collection are currently on display in Art Adventures for Beginners, a free exhibition at the House of Manannan, Peel, running until Sunday 7th June 2026.
The exhibition forms part of the Manx National Heritage You Exhibit programme, which invites artists, community groups, and organisations to propose exhibitions in Manx National Heritage's temporary exhibition spaces.
Open daily, 9:30am-4:30pm. Free admission; donations welcome.
