Meet our students: Jack Gentry

Jack Gentry is our 2021/22 recipient of The Norman Sayle Award for Visual Art and Literature and will be attending Cardiff Metropolitan University for a BA (Hons) degree in Product Design. We caught up with Jack who will be starting their course in September to tell us more about what they're most looking forward to from their first semester.

What and where will I be studying?

Product Design at Cardiff Metropolitan University.

What does receiving this award mean to me?

Receiving this award gives me the chance to have a worry free first year to settle in and focus on my studying at university. After two years completing my A-level courses during a global pandemic it lifts a massive worry and strain off me knowing that I can start Uni life without the financial worries that goes alongside student life. For this I am really grateful.

How will this award make a difference?

This award takes so much pressure off my family and I after a difficult past 2 years. It allows me to go to University with some of the basic equipment needed for a design course, like a laptop & software. This will help massively with my private studying. Receiving this award also enabled me to make my decision to go to university this year and not to defer until 2022.

What am I most looking forward to about my course?

I am looking forward to being able to run wild with creative designs. Plus the opportunity to use new technology and machinery at university excites me as it’s this practical, mechanical side to my ideas where my passion really lies. This side to the design world opens up so many of my ideas, which are endless.
