Students Invited to Participate in 2021 NT Connections Workshop

Drama students aged 11-18 are invited to participate in the 2021 National Youth Theatre Connections project taking place at the Youth Arts Centre, Kensington Road Douglas.

An introductory free workshop will be held at the YAC on Friday 2nd October at 5pm – 6.30pm.

Each year the National Theatre commissions ten new plays for young people to perform, bringing together some of the UK's most exciting writers with the theatre-makers of tomorrow.

Every year, 300 youth theatre companies and over 6,000 young people from every corner of the UK are producing a Connections play. This year NT Connections are adapting their programme to be as flexible as possible, and to respond to the restrictions in place due to Covid-19.

Directing the play this year will be Shawn Sturnick who is a writer, actor and director. Originally from the USA, he has worked in New York City, Boston, Dublin and now the Isle of Man. On the island, he has directed for the Service Players, produced two of his own original plays, and written and directed several short films. He has also written for Irish television and has performed in the international hit Blue Man Group.

David Dawson will be acting as assistant director this year.

Interested participants should register interest with Arts Development Manager, Jane Corkill (Jane.Corkill@gov.im).

The Youth Arts Centre have taken part in the festival for many years and last year the team production of ’Dungeness’ was been put together by director David Dawson and assistant director Gracel Delos Santos, who also acts in the play.

Set in a fictional safe haven home for LGBT+ children, Dungeness explored characters with different social stigmas and labels escaping difficult family lives.

Shawn said: "I saw the excellent production that last year's young actors put together and I feel very lucky to get this chance to work with such a creative and enthusiastic group of performers."
