The Service Players Babysit Calvin in Coventry
Isle of Man amateur dramatic group The Service Players have been invited to perform at the National Drama Festival.
Written by John H Newmeir, Calvin, a ten-month old baby (acted by an adult), can still remember his previous life when he was happily married to Laura, despite the constant attentions of his womanising friend, Bob. Calvin will lose his blissful memories when he reaches his first birthday - or speaks - so he determines nothing will make him talk! When his single parent mum is persuaded by her sexy friend Donna to go out for the evening, he learns that his babysitter is none other than Laura! Alas, she has brought along a friend - lecherous Bob. Calvin sets about thwarting Bob's licentious desires using every trick known to babies. Can Calvin prevent the unthinkable happening... without uttering a word?
The Service Players were founded in 1942 by amongst others the nations only time travelling scarecrow, John Pertwee. The Service Players have become well known on the Island for producing quality comedies, dramas, farces and much more besides. In recent years they have drawn audiences to the theatre with shows such as The Wind in the Willows, Blackadder, One Man Two Guvnors, Night Must Fall, Arcadia and Fawlty Towers.
The Players swept up at the 2023 MADF One Act Festival with awards for Best Play, Best Set, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.
Director Lisa Smith has said "Taking a theatre production to a UK festival is a great honour, showing what the Island is capable of and demonstrating the high level of local talent."
The performance is tonight ( Friday 19th July) at The Albany Theatre, Coventry.
